New Glasgow’s Aberdeen Hospital has added an artificial intelligence-powered weapons detection system to its main doors and emergency department entrance. Nova Scotia Health says the screening device at Aberdeen Hospital is to enhance safety and security for patients, visitors and hospital staff. The health authority says there will be no public access through any other doors. It adds that people going to the hospital should account for the new screening process and arrive 10 to 15 minutes earlier than usual.
Arts and culture groups across Nova Scotia staged protests Wednesday to draw attention to recent provincial budget cuts aimed at culture and heritage grants. The Nova Scotia Arts Coalition says demonstrations were held in New Glasgow, Wolfville, Annapolis Royal, Halifax, Yarmouth, Sydney, Shelburne, Liverpool and Antigonish. Last week, Premier Tim Houston’s provincial government announced it would cut 130-million dollars in government grants, reducing or eliminating funding for scholarship programs, arts funding and Mi’kmaq and African Nova Scotian programs. On Monday, a First Nations-led protest attracted hundreds of protesters to the provincial legislature, where they took aim at the government’s resource extraction policies and cuts to cultural programs.
Parents of people with disabilities say it’s going to become tougher to care for loved ones because of the Nova Scotia government’s recent budget cuts. Kari Robertson told reporters at the legislature Wednesday that she had to quit her job years ago to care for her adult son, who was diagnosed with refractory epilepsy when he was four. She says she’s concerned and angry about the government’s 20 per cent cut to the provincial caregiver benefit, which helps people like her cover expenses while caring for loved ones. N-D-P Leader Claudia Chender is calling on the Progressive Conservative government to reverse the cuts and has introduced a bill to double the benefit to eight-hundred dollars a month.
