There is an Orange Level Freezing Rain warning in effect for Pictou County. Significant ice build-up due to freezing rain is expected. Total freezing rain amounts of 10 to 15 mm, possibly higher in some areas before it ends late this morning.
At 12:01 a.m. this morning, Pictou County District RCMP assumed responsibility for policing services in the Town of Trenton.
S/Sgt. Curtis MacKinnon, District Commander for Pictou County District RCMP, says the RCMP has worked closely with the New Glasgow Regional Police Service and the Town to ensure a smooth, well-planned transition. He says there will be no interruption during this transition, and all records and information are being securely transferred from New Glasgow Regional Police Service to the RCMP.
The Province says it’s investing a total of more than $73-thousand through the Feeding Communities Fund to support six local initiatives focused on improving food access and community support in Pictou Centre. The Feeding Communities Fund is a one-time increased investment of $5.3 million across Nova Scotia to help organizations provide safe, nutritious food to Nova Scotians experiencing food insecurity. The fund is supported by proceeds from the sale of U.S. alcohol products. Organizations with projects that will receive funding include the Pictou County Food Bank; Highland Community Residential Services; Pictou County Women’s Resource and Sexual Assault Centre Society; Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library; Tearmann Society for Abused Women; and Ward 1 Social and Recreation Centre. Meanwhile, more than $28-thousand is being invested in projects in Pictou West headed by The Community Support Society of River John; Pictou (West) Food Bank Society; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pictou County.
Minimum wage is increasing across Atlantic Canada as of today. Nova Scotia’s minimum wage is increasing by 25 cents, and will hit 16 dollars and 75 cents beginning today. P-E-I will have the highest minimum hourly pay in the region at 17 dollars, up from 16 dollars and 50 cents. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the new minimum hourly pay hits 16 dollars and 35 cents today, which is a 35 cent increase. New Brunswick will continue to have the lowest minimum wage in the region, at 15 dollars and 90 cents an hour, up just 25 cents.
