The Bank of Canada held its benchmark interest rate steady at 2.25-per cent for the fourth straight time on Wednesday. Central bank officials are warning the policy rate could move in a variety of directions. Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem says the key rate is probably at about the right levels if the economy evolves in line with the central bank’s projections but warns of risks tied to the war in the Middle East. The Bank of Canada’s forecast for overall growth hasn’t changed much from its last outlook in January, with Macklem saying he expects inflation to peak around three per cent before cooling early next year.
