Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after an RCMP officer shot and wounded a man near Chelsea on the province’s South Shore Thursday morning.
RCMP say officers responded to a report of a person carrying a weapon on Highway 210 around 9 a.m. During the incident, an officer fired their service weapon, striking the man. Police say officers immediately provided first aid at the scene.
The shooting follows an emergency alert issued Wednesday evening, warning residents in parts of Queens and Lunenburg counties to shelter in place and avoid Highway 210 while police searched for an armed, suspicious man. The alert was cancelled later that night, although the suspect had not yet been located.
The Serious Incident Response Team is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The homeless shelter in New Glasgow known as Viola’s Place has changed its name after a request by the family of Viola Desmond. The shelter was named after the late civil rights activist and will now be known as Northstar Shelter and Support Services. The shelter has received public complaints recently due to disturbances, thefts and drug use around the property. Desmond’s brother-in-law Joe Robson says the family was never consulted before the shelter was named after her in 2018 and sees the negative attention it has been receiving as a slur on the family name.
