The wildfire on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore is now being held.
The Department of Natural Resources says the fire remains about 1,447 hectares in size and saw very little growth on Saturday. Officials say it’s now contained within its current boundaries and isn’t expected to spread.
The Halifax Regional Municipality has lifted its mandatory evacuation order, allowing residents to return home. Crews remain on scene today, although water-bombing aircraft may not be needed.

U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to impose additional tariffs on Canadian goods, blaming Canada for wildfire smoke drifting into the United States.
In a social media post, Trump accused Canada of failing to properly manage its forests and said the cost of the smoke should be added to existing tariffs. He also says he plans to speak with Prime Minister Mark Carney about the issue.
Canada’s emergency management minister says the country has invested billions in wildfire prevention and notes Canada and the U.S. have worked together to fight wildfires for decades.

Some Trenton residents are criticizing a new town policy that limits people from bringing the same issue before council more than once every six months, unless new information is available.
Residents say the rule makes it harder to raise ongoing concerns, including sewage backups and requests for new street lighting. Mayor Alec Dove says the policy is intended to streamline meetings and prevent repeated discussion of the same issues, adding council will review the policy after a year.

Tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate as the two countries exchange strikes.
Iran’s supreme leader is warning of “unforgettable lessons” if U.S. attacks continue, while Tehran says it is suspending commitments under a temporary agreement aimed at ending the conflict.
The U.S. military says its latest strikes targeted Iranian military infrastructure. Iran has also launched attacks in the region, including one that killed two U.S. service members in Jordan.
The fighting has raised concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.

On Saturday, the Annual Race on The River – Pictou County Dragon Boat Festival took place on the East River in New Glasgow. The Dragon Beasts came away as this year’s grand final champion. And the Women Alike Abreast a River Dragon Boat Team won the breast cancer final on home water.
The event raised $107,000 for The Women Alike Breast Cancer Survivors Society, Special Olympics Northern Region, and the Pictou County Prostate Cancer Support Association. The most money raised since 2019.

Spain is back on top of the soccer world. They defeated defending champion Argentina 1-nothing in extra time on Sunday to capture the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Ferran Torres scoring the winner in the 106th minute. It marks Spain’s second men’s World Cup title after also lifting the trophy in 2010.
