Gasoline prices went down, but diesel prices headed up overnight in Nova Scotia. Gasoline is down 2 cents per litre, putting the minimum pump price for regular self-serve gasoline at 191.8 cents per litre. Diesel is up 6.2 cents per litre. Putting the minimum pump price at 240.4 cents per litre in the local area.

A Pictou County man has been sentenced to four years in prison for refusing to provide a breath sample following a 2023 crash that killed two passengers. Twenty-six-year-old Terry Robert McGrath pleaded guilty to two counts of refusing a breathalyzer while knowing the crash had caused deaths. The collision claimed the lives of Nicholas Laffin and Alanta Bezanson. McGrath will also be prohibited from driving for four years after completing his prison sentence.

Colchester County District RCMP are investigating a serious collision involving a cyclist in Bible Hill. Police say a bicycle and a pickup truck collided on College Road just after 7:15 Wednesday morning. A 22-year-old cyclist from the Truro area suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital. The 19-year-old truck driver was not hurt. The investigation is ongoing.

WestJet and its flight attendants’ union remain in a contract dispute as a potential strike deadline approaches. The Canadian Union of Public Employees, which represents about 4,400 WestJet cabin crew members, has issued a 72-hour strike notice, while the airline has issued a lockout notice in response. Job action could begin as early as Sunday if a new agreement is not reached. The two sides continue negotiations.

Nova Scotia Health says its strategy of offering jobs to Dalhousie University health-care graduates is helping keep more professionals in the province. The health authority says about 40 per cent of this year’s health-care graduates have accepted positions so far, with recruitment continuing in several fields. The strongest results are in the physician assistant program, while some nurse practitioner graduates are still considering their options. A health-care union says competitive wages and workplace support will also be key to retaining workers.

Multiple traffic notices from the Town of New Glasgow for Events happening this weekend. Dalhousie Street, between Archimedes Street and Provost Street, will be closed Friday, July 31st from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. to support the New Glasgow Fire Department Station 33 chicken barbecue pickup. 

There will also be a closure of Riverside Parkway between MacLean Street and Dalhousie Street to support the 30th Anniversary of the Jubilee happening at Glasgow Square. Please be aware of increased foot traffic in the area and drive safely.

Nova Scotia athletes are making their mark at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Sarah Mitton from Brooklyn has successfully defended her Commonwealth title, winning gold in the women’s shot put with a throw of 19.88 metres, becoming a two-time Commonwealth champion. Halifax’s Ellie Black also captured gold in the women’s individual all-around gymnastics competition, making history as the first athlete to win two all-around titles at the Games. Seventeen-year-old Chloe Dunbar of Newport, Hants County added a silver medal in the para women’s 100-metre T45-47 final. Team Canada currently sits third in the medal standings with 45 total medals. 15 gold, 13 silver and 17 bronze.
