POSSIBILITY OF A PRIVATE PROBE INTO TRENTON ELECTION RESULTS

The uncertainty over the Trenton municipal election saga will remain the focus for a lot of people this week. Returning officer Josephine MacDonald’s report on suspicions of wrongdoing has been delivered to Trenton CAO Wayne Teasdale. Teasdale has given a terse “no comment” in questioning from our newsroom. Shannon MacInnis lost by 62 votes to Town Councillor Don Hussher just over a week ago. Town Solicitor Greg MacDonald says with the Town of Trenton as his client, he can’t comment, even though we pointed out to him that the returning officer’s report is a taxpayer-funded document. The man who won, Don Hussher says “if there are any concerns, they’ll have to be addressed. “ If the town of Trenton doesn’t launch an official appeal of the voting results, one could still be spearheaded by private citizens. That includes individual voters, or members of Trenton Town Council.

SIX ACTIVE CASES OF COVID IN NOVA SCOTIA

Public Health says no new COVID-19 cases were reported in the latest update from Sunday. The health authority says as of this morning, there’s confirmation of 6 active cases across the province, with the latest three announced Saturday. Those three are all related to travel outside the Atlantic Bubble. Two of the weekend cases are in the Central Zone, which includes Halifax, the Eastern Shore and Western Hants County. The third case is in the Eastern Health Zone, and that’s a person who was diagnosed outside the province and is now on the road to recovery in the health zone that includes Antigonish, Guysborough County and Cape Breton. There were two deaths from Coronavirus in New Brunswick yesterday, with two new infections reported as well.
If you or someone you know has been in Toronto this month, health officials say there’s a possible exposure to COVID-19 on another flight from Toronto to Halifax. WestJet flight 254 left Toronto at 9:45 p.m. on October 17th and landed in Halifax at 12:47 a.m. on October 18th.
The province says passengers in rows 1 to 5 seats A, B, C, and D are more likely to have had close contact. Passengers in these seats are asked to call 811 for advice and to continue to self-isolate. Public Health says people on that flight could develop symptoms up to, and including, October 31st.
The provinces hardest hit by the global COVID-19 pandemic released sobering numbers on Sunday, with Quebec’s overall case count passing the 100,000 mark and Ontario registering more than 1,000 single-day cases for the first time since the start of the worldwide outbreak.
Despite registering comparable daily tallies, the two provinces long at the epicentre of Canada’s COVID-19 cases appeared to be on opposite trajectories.
Public health experts noted that Quebec’s long-standing high case counts appeared to be levelling off, while stressing the week ahead will be crucial to bring Ontario’s surging numbers back under control. (Canadian Press)

E-COURT PROJECT ALLOWS VIRTUAL JUSTICE IN NOVA SCOTIA

If you have an ongoing family legal issue, you’ll soon be able to use a new online eCourt system aimed at people in HRM at first, and eventually spreading to the rest of the province.
The provincial justice department says eCourt is a pilot project. And it’s set up as an alternative to the in-person court process aimed at solving simple family legal issues. The program is the first of its kind in Canada and allows for the virtual filing and exchange of court documents, online conferencing, and realtime exchanges between lawyers and a judge. The pilot is being launched with judges of the Unified Family Court in Halifax and there are plans to expand to the other counties as the proper resources are put in place.
