A lone bagpiper played slow airs outside a church Sunday as relatives of 22 people slain during a killer’s rampage in rural Nova Scotia gathered for an emotional ceremony to honour the victims one year later. The sombre event at First United Church in Truro, which was livestreamed in lieu of being open to the public, began with a provincewide moment of silence. The hour-long service was organized by a committee of the Nova Scotia Remembers Legacy Society, led by Jenny Kierstead, the sister of Lisa McCully — a neighbour of the gunman who was among the first killed on the night of April 18. “We have all suffered so much this year that it is our intention to bring some light and beauty to our lives on this dark day,” she said in a pre-recorded statement. Earlier in the day, hundreds of people took part in a series of memorial walks and runs in and around Truro. The anniversary was also marked by a peaceful march to the RCMP detachment in nearby Bible Hill. Nova Scotia RCMP Assistant Commissioner Lee Bergerman said the police force would observe a moment of silence at 2 p.m. today. At this time, Pictou District RCMP, along with municipal partners will be pulling over to the side of the road on highway 104 between exits 23 & 24 for 2 minutes. (The Canadian Press)
**A confidential, toll-free line is in place for Nova Scotians in need of emotional support. The service is available 24 hours a day, every day, and it includes service for the hearing impaired. It can be reached by calling 1-866-885-6540.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pictou County – Establishes #NSStrong Bursary

Executive Director, Margie Grant-Walsh
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pictou County has established a community bursary in memory of the victims of the Nova Scotia tragedy. The local organization says the #NSStrong Bursary will be awarded to a Pictou County student whose focus of study is the human service field, and who has been a mentor and has made a positive impact in their school community in a “non-fundraising” capacity. Executive Director, Margie Grant-Walsh says, “It is our honor to have established the #NSStrong Bursary. Everyone in in Nova Scotia was impacted. There was a Pictou County connection, and my family also had a personal loss in the tragedy. We thought it might be a nice way to memorialize our lost fellow Nova Scotians with a small bursary of $500.” Applications will open on April 23rd and will close on May 31st. More information can be found on the organization’s website www.bbbsofpc.com under What We Do.

LIBERALS TO RELEASE FEDERAL BUDGET WITH EYE ON MANAGING CRISIS, POST-PANDEMIC GROWTH

The federal government will this afternoon unveil its spending plans to manage the remainder of the COVID-19 crisis and chart an economic course in a post-pandemic Canada. The Liberals’ first budget in two years is expected to outline the government’s plans for a national child-care system, including what strings will be attached to any spending. There are also expected to be measures to boost the supply of affordable housing and money aimed at greening the economy as the Liberals look to chart a path for promises on climate change. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is being asked by provinces for more health-care money to manage the ongoing pandemic and future costs, while hard-hit businesses, charities and workers are looking for a pledge to keep aid flowing beyond the summer when many programs are slated to end. There is also a political element to the budget, as the government needs to find at least one other major party to support the document in confidence votes in the House of Commons. Without a parliamentary dance partner, the government would fall and the country would be plunged into a federal election campaign. (The Canadian Press)
