N.S. reports one death, 32 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday

On Tuesday, Nova Scotia reported one new COVID-19-related death and 32 new cases of the virus. Officials say the death identified yesterday, involves a man in his 70s in the province’s northern health zone. The death is the 97th in the province since the onset of the pandemic. Nova Scotia has a total of 205 active cases with 13 people in hospital, including one in intensive care because of the infection.
Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia’s chief medical officer of health, and Tracey Barbrick, associate deputy minister, COVID-19 Immunization Strategy, will hold a technical briefing updating the province’s COVID-19 vaccine program and Phase 5 plans today (Wednesday, Sept. 29). It will be followed at 3 p.m. by a COVID-19 update, in-person news conference and teleconference with Premier Tim Houston, Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson and Dr. Strang. New Brunswick is reporting two more COVID-19-related deaths and 68 new cases of the disease. Officials say the two deaths identified yesterday were both involved people in their 80s, bringing the death count in the province to 56. Of the new cases, officials say 58 involve people who are not fully vaccinated. New Brunswick now has 682 active cases.
Premier Tim Houston attends Council of Atlantic Premiers meeting

Premier Tim Houston took part in a virtual meeting of the Atlantic Premiers on Tuesday. During the meeting, premiers agreed on the need for the federal government to increase funding to provinces and territories through the Canada Health Transfer. They also discussed collaboration opportunities on the COVID-19 pandemic, health-care services, a robust recovery for the region’s economy, the region’s energy needs, and growing its population The Premiers also called on the federal government to develop new programs to address housing-market challenges in the region
Nova Scotia Finance Minister Allan MacMaster is expected to present a budget update for the 2021-22 fiscal year this afternoon. This will be the first update since Premier Tim Houston’s Progressive Conservatives came to power last month. The former Liberal finance minister tabled the 2021-22 budget in late March. It projected a 585-million dollar deficit caused by pandemic costs, including an estimated 350 million for such things as personal protective equipment and vaccination clinics around the province.
Tree planting ceremony taking place today at Pictou Landing First Nation School

As part of Pictou Landing First Nation School’s Day of Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day ceremony – the Town of New Glasgow will be planting a tree on the school grounds this morning. The ceremony begins at 9:15am (Wednesday, September 29th). All are welcome to attend.
