N.S. reports 3 deaths, 85 people in COVID-19 hospital units Thursday

The province reported three COVID-19-related deaths yesterday – a woman in her 50s in the central zone, a woman in her 70s in the northern zone and a man in his 70s in the eastern zone. There were 18 hospital admissions and 11 discharges on Thursday. There are now 85 people in hospital who were admitted due to COVID-19 and are receiving specialized care in a COVID-19 designated unit. That includes 12 people in ICU. An additional 696 new lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported yesterday. There are 382 cases in Central Zone, 95 cases in Eastern Zone, 63 cases in Northern Zone and 156 cases in Western Zone. There are an estimated 5,430 active cases of COVID-19 in Nova Scotia.
Additional charges laid against man in connection to Truro homicide

Police says ten additional charges have been laid against a 22-year old man charged in connection with the homicide of 23-year-old Prabhjot Singh Katri in Truro last September. Marcus Michael Denny of Pictou Landing First Nation was arrested during a traffic stop on Young Street Wednesday afternoon. Police had an active warrant for Denny for being an accessory after the fact in Katri’s death, and he had multiple warrants for violent offences in Pictou and Colchester Counties. Shortly after his arrest, Truro Police Service searched an address on Young Street, and seized a loaded handgun. Denny has been remanded into custody and will appear in Provincial Court at a later date. The additional charges relate to breach of court conditions, and firearms and weapons offences.
Multiple vehicles collision in New Glasgow send 2 people to hospital

A four-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon in New Glasgow sent two people to hospital. It happened at about 3:20 p.m. at the intersection of East River Road and Atlantic Drive. Two people in one of the vehicles, a 46-year old man and two-year old passenger, were taken by EHS to Aberdeen Hospital with non life threatening injuries. Two of the vehicles sustained extensive damage and ha to be towed from the scene. New Glasgow Regional Police say weather and road conditions were a factor in the cause of the crash.
Increase once again at the pumps in N.S.

Fuel prices have increased once again Nova Scotia. Gas went up 3.3 cents per litre overnight to 145.4 cents per litre in the local area. Diesel jumped 4.4 cents per litre to 153.2.
Acadia University faculty set strike deadline of Feb. 1

The Acadia University Faculty Association has set a strike deadline of February 1st. The Association represents 350 faculty members at Acadia University. A provincially-appointed conciliator has declared an impasse in contract negotiations between the Faculty Association and the Acadia board of governors. The conciliator filed their report last Friday and after a period of 14 days, the two sides are then legally able to begin a strike or lockout.
Town of Pictou ready to share draft Waterfront Plan

The Town of Pictou will soon be sharing the draft Waterfront Plan. The draft Plan will be presented to the community virtually next Thursday, January 27, at 6:30 p.m., and will be followed by a question and answer session. Those interested in attending the meeting are asked to register online.

15-year-old Maddux MacKenzie from New Glasgow has been named to the Team Nova Scotia baseball team, which will be competing at the Canada Summer Games from August 6th to 21st in Niagara Falls.
