Man behind Nova Scotia mass shooting came from dysfunctional family: uncle

The uncle of a man who shot and killed 22 people in Nova Scotia says the killer was raised in a deeply dysfunctional family. Newly released court documents show that Chris Wortman told police soon after the shooting in April 2020 he wasn’t surprised to learn his nephew was responsible for Canada’s worst mass shooting. Wortman told police he always felt his nephew was capable of killing someone, but didn’t think he would go on a “rampage.” He also told police his nephew was a lifelong scammer and opportunist and was estranged from the rest of the family. Peter MacKay — who launched his career in politics in Nova Scotia — isn’t going to seek the federal Conservative leadership this time around. He made the announcement over the weekend, saying he came to the decision after consulting with friends, colleagues and family. MacKay, who served as a Harper government cabinet minister, placed second to former leader Erin O’Toole in the 2020 race. He says he’s still paying off debt from that contest. Meanwhile, Patrick Brown has entered the leadership race for the federal Conservative party. The 43-year-old launched his campaign in Brampton, Ontario, where he’s been mayor since 2018. He’s the fifth candidate to declare his candidacy.
