The RCMP Northeast Nova Major Crime Unit has charged a man with murder after a fatal collision on Denoon St. in Pictou.
At about 9:55 p.m. on Friday, Pictou County District RCMP responded to a report of a collision involving a pick-up truck and a pedestrian at an intersection on Denoon St. in Pictou.
The pedestrian, a 56-year-old Pictou man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pick-up truck, a 40-year-old Pictou man, was arrested and taken into custody.
40-year old Vernon Edward Gallant of Pictou has been charged with Second Degree Murder and appeared before a Justice of the Peace, via teleconference on Saturday.
Gallant was remanded into custody and appeared in Pictou Provincial Court on Monday, where he was again remanded into custody.
His next appearance will be in Pictou Provincial Court on July 14th. The investigation is ongoing.
The police chief of Truro has told the public inquiry into the Nova Scotia mass shooting that the R-C-M-P did not ask his force for help as the murders continued over 13 hours.
Dave MacNeil has testified that normal protocol would have been for the Mounties in the nearby detachment to request help before he could dispatch some of his 36 sworn officers.
MacNeil says his force had three officers on duty the night the shootings began and says he would “definitely” have called in officers as needed if asked for assistance.
He also says his officers were trained in responding to active shooters and in the use of carbines.
The Nova Scotia government is spending 1.7-million dollars on projects to promote healthier communities, and improve infrastructure and economic growth.
The government is funding 47 projects through the Recreational Facility Development Grant program.
The funds help community groups, municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations develop and improve facilities to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation.
Some of the Recreation Development Fund recipients include East River Valley Recreation Association, Positive Action for the Keppoch Society, Stellarton Memorial Community Centre Association, and Town of Antigonish.
Rink Revitalization Fund recipients include Antigonish Arena Commission, District 13 Recreation and Planning Commission, Hector Arena Commission, Stellar Curling Club, Town of Trenton, and Westville & Area Recreation and Planning Commission.
A road construction – traffic note for Pictou County. A section of Douglas Road in Westville is closed for a cross culvert replacement from today through Friday night. There’s a detour set up by way of Greenhill Road, Trunk 4 and Alma Road.
The umbrella organization for food banks across Nova Scotia says more people are being forced to seek help to put food on their tables as the cost of groceries has soared over the past several months.
Feed Nova Scotia says the number of new people accessing its services doubled in the first three months of this year compared to the same period in 2021.
It says on its website that one in six Nova Scotia households are experiencing food insecurity _ with certain populations being disproportionately impacted.
Feed Nova Scotia says Black and Indigenous households are three to three-and-a-half times more likely to be food insecure.
