Canadian civil rights pioneer Viola Desmond has been commemorated with a plaque at the site of the Nova Scotia theatre where she was arrested in 1946.
Parks Canada revealed the plaque at the former Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, where Desmond challenged segregation by sitting in the whites-only floor seats while watching a movie.
Her courageous act occurred nearly a decade before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Alabama.
Desmond, who died in 1965, received an official apology and pardon for her arrest from the province in April 2010.
