There were significant jumps in gasoline and diesel prices overnight in Nova Scotia. Gas prices increased by 8.0 cents per litre to 166.3 cents per litre locally. Diesel prices went up by 15.0 cents per litre to 214.0 cents per litre in the local area.
Nova Scotia R-C-M-P say they’re investigating the theft of a large cache of firearms during a break-in in Pictou County earlier this week.
Police say 17 rifles and two handguns were stolen from a home in Greenhill sometime during the day on Monday.
They include 10 Marlin level action 336 rifles, a Smith & Wesson M and P .22 calibre pistol and a Walther P-38 9 millimetre pistol.
The Mounties say a black pickup truck with a loud muffler was seen at the home during this time and anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
Thousands of homes in Nova Scotia are still without power nearly two weeks after post-tropical storm Fiona blew through Atlantic Canada.
Nova Scotia Power said yesterday its work has been complicated by many single-customer outages, which the company says can slow its progress because at least one crew is required to restore power to one customer.
As well, the utility says the remaining work can take longer when heavy equipment is needed to remove trees and debris, and several crews are required to do the work.
Small businesses struggling in the aftermath of hurricane Fiona can now apply for support through the Small Business Hurricane Relief Program.
The program will provide a one-time grant of $2,500 to eligible small businesses to help offset the cost of unanticipated closures.
Legislation to temporarily double G-S-T rebates for lower-income Canadians struggling to deal with high inflation has passed unanimously in the House of Commons.
The bill now heads to the Senate. Once it becomes law, people who are eligible will get a lump-sum payment equal to the rebate cheques that will be sent in October and January.
