New Glasgow Regional Police have charged a young person with several firearm related offences.
Last Friday morning, Police received a report of a male youth in possession of a handgun at a property on Park Street in New Glasgow adjacent to North Nova Education Centre.
New Glasgow Regional Police officers along with the New Glasgow Regional Police Major Crime Unit and School Resource Offices Unit immediately responded to the area and to the North Nova Education Centre, where the high school immediately went on hold and secure.
Police immediately were able to determine the youth’s location on Park Street and he was safely taken into custody.
The male youth had a small pack with a replica handgun located inside the pack.
He has been charged with Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous to The Public Peace, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Breach of Probation, and Breach of Weapons Prohibition.
The RCMP says its officers across Nova Scotia have been responding to an increasing number of ATV collisions.
Provincial government statistics show that there’s been an 18% increase in off-highway vehicle registrations between 2020 and 2021.
There are approximately 50,000 registered off-highway vehicles in the province.
The Mounties say the data shows there are three main causes of major off-highway vehicle incidents — impaired driving, speed, distracted operation of the vehicle, or a combination of all three.
Hundreds of public school staff at Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education were on the picket line Monday.
The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union says the strike by over 600 workers employed by the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education comes after more than a year of bargaining with wages the key sticking point.
The workers include educational assistants, early childhood educators, student support workers and outreach workers among others.
The union says another 160 workers at the South Shore Regional Centre for Education intend to walk off the job today.
Nova Scotia Power says a weekend power outage in Truro and Stewiacke was caused by vandalism.
The utility says thousands temporarily lost power just before noon on Saturday after someone cut the wires off a transformer at a substation.
The utility had to cut power to the area to allow crews to make repairs.
Power was restored later Saturday afternoon.
