Antigonish County District RCMP are investigating a fatal crash in James River.
On Saturday at approximately 4:30 p.m., RCMP, fire services, and EHS all responded to a two-vehicle collision on Hwy. 104 near exit 30 in James River.
Police say two vehicles travelling in opposite directions in a construction zone collided.
The driver and lone occupant of one of the vehicles, a 58-year-old Lower South River man, suffered significant injuries and was taken by EHS to hospital where he later died.
The driver and lone occupant of the other vehicle, a 21-year-old Trenton woman, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by EHS.
A collision reconstructionist attended the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada says one the country’s most profitable lobster fishing areas will open for the season today (Monday) after being held back by weather-related delays.
Nova Scotia’s lobster fishing area 34 extends from Shelburne County around to the southwest coast of the province.
The area was slated open for the season last Monday, but it was postponed due to storm and wind conditions.
St. FX University conferred more than 350 degrees during 2022 Fall Convocation held Sunday.
PhDs, masters, and degrees in education, along with degrees in science, arts, engineering, and a diploma in artificial intelligence were presented.
The honorary degree was bestowed on Faisal Joseph, who graduated from StFX in 1982.
An accomplished lawyer, Dr. Joseph is a familiar voice for the Islamic community in Canada.
Long-serving police officers from across Nova Scotia were recognized for contributions to law enforcement in the province last Wednesday.
Attending this year’s Provincial Police Long Service Awards event was Chief of Police Stephen Chisholm and Deputy Chief Ryan Leil who assisted the Justice Minister and Attorney General Brad Johns, who presented the awards in a ceremony in Halifax to police recipients throughout Pictou County and Nova Scotia.
15 year medals were presented to four New Glasgow Regional Police Officers that include; Cpl. Allan Chabassol (15) Cst. Rebecca Heighton (15) Cst. Harvey Timmons (15) Cpl. Donald Wadden (15).
Two officers from the Stellarton Police Service were also honoured.
Inspector Christopher Pond was presented a medal for 15 years of service and Sergeant Paul Pentz was presented the medal for 25 years of service.
The provincial police awards program recognizes police officers who have served in the province for 15 and 25 consecutive years.
And, there was incredible support for the Annual Toy Drive held at Canadian Tire in New Glasgow last Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The Toy Drive is held every year by the Nova Scotia Jeep Club North Nova Chapter, the United Way Of Pictou County, and sponsored by Stingray Radio New Glasgow.
The organizations raised $20,380.20 in toy and cash donations combined over the three day period, with donations still coming in as we speak.
The Nova Scotia Jeep Club North Nova Chapter will now work with the United Way of Pictou County to distribute toys to families in need all over Pictou County this holiday season.
A sports note, in the Maritime Junior Hockey League the Pictou County Weeks Crushers lost 5-3 to Amherst.
