Nova Scotia’s wide-ranging climate plan is getting generally positive reviews.
The plan released Wednesday includes 68 measures aimed at reaching Nova Scotia’s legislated climate goals.
Liberal environment critic Iain Rankin calls the plan “solid” but says a “big hole” is the lack of a plan for decommissioning the province’s coal-fired power plants.
Marla MacLeod, of the Ecology Action Centre, says she’s pleased to see accountability measures for the government, but is concerned about a lack of detail on funding for the actions.
Nova Scotia’s finance minister is denying that the province lacks accountability and transparency when it comes to approving extra spending by departments that have blown their budgets.
The province’s auditor general said in a report this week that Nova Scotia is unique in the country in allowing such spending to be approved by the cabinet without a vote or approval of the legislature.
But Allan MacMaster says the government is open and accountable because it’s required to deliver two fiscal updates a year.
The Nova Scotia government has announced $29-million in additional funding for the continuing care system, including $8.1-millon to add more long-term care assistants.
The province says the funding will also be used for improvements to long-term care facilities, infection control in care homes and to continue a wound-care program.
$2-million will go toward a pilot program that brings together older people with a nurse, occupational therapist and handyperson to help them live more independently.
The province says the funding is in addition to other recent investments to support seniors and continuing care.
