The region is bracing for a holiday storm today into Saturday. Pictou County is under a Rainfall Warning and Wind Warning.
Heavy rains are expected to begin this afternoon, giving 20 to 40 mm in some areas.
Winds will get strong this afternoon with maximum wind gusts eventually reaching 90kh.
The heavy rain should end near midnight and the winds will diminish to gusts of 80kh overnight.
Storms across the country are creating havoc for holiday travellers.
WestJet’s chief operations officer says the airline has made the difficult decison to cancel flights at airports in B-C, Ontario and Quebec due to winter storms.
Diederik Pen says cancellations apply to all flights scheduled to arrive and depart Toronto’s Pearson International Airport beginning at 9 a-m eastern time today until the end of the day.
All flights into and out of Vancouver International Airport that were scheduled between 11:50 p-m Pacific time tonight and late Friday afternoon have also been cancelled.
Pen says the extreme weather events that continue to impact multiple regions across Canada are unlike anything they’ve experienced.
Gas prices went up overnight in Nova Scotia, but there was no change in diesel prices, which had decreased a couple days ago when the Utility and Review Board invoked the interrupter clause.
Gas prices rose by 1.8 cents per litre putting the minimum pump price for regular self-serve gas at 142.8 cents per litre locally.
A detailed report by Nova Scotia Power is providing a region by region breakdown of how often and how many customers lost power during Fiona.
As was heard during the event, about 425-thousand customers lost power during the September 24th storm.
However, power was interrupted for customers about three quarters of a million times, showing that some customers lost power multiple times.
The report says the average restoration time was about four days, while about half of customers had their power back within two days.
