The provincial government has announced 10.6-million dollars to support the Municipality of Pictou County’s independent project to bring high-speed internet to more than 47-hundred homes and businesses.The funding for the 53-million-dollar fibre expansion project will come from the Nova Scotia Internet Funding Trust, which was established in 2018. The federal government announced up to 31-million dollars for the project in December, while the county is expected to contribute 10.6-million. The province says 99.99 per cent of Nova Scotia homes and businesses will have internet access when Pictou County’s independent project is complete, which is expected in 2025.
New Glasgow Regional Police say that a 14-year-old youth, who was reported missing from New Glasgow Tuesday morning, was found safe Tuesday night in Truro by Truro Police Service. New Glasgow Regional Police are thanking the public for their assistance with their postings and sharing of information throughout social media and the community.
Colchester County District RCMP were in Millbrook on Fern Dr. on Tuesday night investigating a report of gun shots. Officers secured the area and did take one man into custody. No one was injured during the incident.
The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation is reporting that total sales are up in both alcohol and cannabis for the most recent quarter. Results from October 2022 to January 1st 2023 show that alcohol sales are up by 5.6 per cent, hitting 200 million dollars in sales for the quarter. Cannabis sales from the same period were up 9.2 per cent, which represents 27.6 million dollars. The liquor corporation says locally produced coolers and locally grown cannabis led the sales growth over the quarter.
The Town of New Glasgow has achieved its third milestone through Partners for Climate Protection Network by developing a local Community Climate Change Action Plan. The PCP Network identifies and celebrates work that municipalities are undertaking to reduce their carbon footprints and promote environmental sustainability through a corporate and community lens. In 2022, Town Council approved New Glasgow’s Community Climate Action Plan. The community plan outlines how the Town will reduce its community emissions by 50% below 2018 levels by 2030.
The Halifax Mooseheads junior hockey team has been sold to American businessman Sam Simon. Simon’s company, Michigan-based Simon Group Holdings, made the announcement yesterday, saying he was purchasing the Q-M-J-H-L team from former Montreal Canadiens forward Bobby Smith. Smith, who was born in North Sydney, was majority owner of the team for 20 years. Simon did not disclose how much he paid for the team.
