The Nova Scotia government says it will spend eight-million dollars to help organizations supporting women experiencing gender-based violence.
The government issued a statement on Wednesday — International Women’s Day — saying the money will be given to transition houses, women’s centres and other organizations.
Half of the money will go to the Transition House Association of Nova Scotia.
Last year, 79 per cent of the victims in more than 1,600 domestic violence assaults reported to police were women.
The Nova Scotia government has promised to spend 25-million dollars on establishing health data analytics and administration programs at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax.
Advanced Education Minister Brian Wong said the money will be used to develop a diploma program in health-care analytics.
As well, the university will offer a business administration program for health-care administrators, office directors and family doctors.
Nova Scotia’s Opposition Liberals are calling on Tim Houston’s Progressive Conservative government to establish an avian flu testing lab in the province.
The party issued a statement yesterday saying the province should follow the lead of the other Atlantic provinces, which have already responded to a surge in the disease over the last year.
The Liberals say farmers continue to feel the economic impact of an outbreak that was first reported in February 2022.
If a farm animal is suspected of having the illness, samples are sent outside the province, sometimes as far as Ontario or Manitoba, which the Liberals say results in long wait-times, adding unnecessary stress on affected farmers.
Nova Scotia has new legislation governing boxing, mixed martial arts and kickboxing.
The province Combat Sports Authority Act was proclaimed law yesterday.
Culture Minister Pat Dunn says the new law is aimed at ensuring that professional and amateur combat sports are safe and accountable.
The new regulations also designate sanctioning bodies for amateur combat sports, including boxing, judo, karate, taekwondo and wrestling.
