Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston has announced a 10-thousand dollar retention bonus for nurses in the public health care system.
Houston says his message to nurses is “we need you” and as long as they keep working in the system, he says the government has their back.
Another 10-thousand dollar incentive will be paid next year to nurses who commit to staying in the province’s publicly-funded healthcare system for another two years.
The bonuses are being offered outside any wage agreements that may be negotiated at the bargaining table as talks are now underway.

Last Thursday, RCMP received a report that a man, who does not have a firearms license, was in possession of firearms at a home on Hwy. 2 in Lower Onslow.
The police learned through their investigation that the man was also subject to a lifetime firearms prohibition due to a Robbery conviction in 2006.
Police searched the home on Friday, located and arrested the 37-year old man at the home, and seized two rifles, a revolver, a crossbow and ammunition.
Halifax police say they made five arrests and issued 86 tickets in connection with St. Patrick’s Day gatherings that took place over the weekend near Dalhousie University.
Police say offences included public intoxication and illegal possession of alcohol.
They allege many of the hundreds of participants were disruptive and demonstrated a “high level of disregard” for neighbours, community members and first responders.
Police say they had to deploy significant resources to manage the area.
