Cumberland County District RCMP are investigating a deadly crash on Hwy. 2 in Fort Lawrence.
On Saturday at about 10:05 p.m., RCMP, fire and EHS all responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision involving an SUV and a car.
There were four people in the SUV at the time of the collision, and a 2-month old infant, 26-year-old man, and 43-year-old woman were all pronounced dead at the scene.
A 21-year-old woman who was also in the SUV suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.
There were two people in the car at the time of the collision — a 19-year-old woman who suffered serious injuries and a 24-year-old man who suffered minor injuries.
Both were taken to hospital by ambulance.
Last Thursday, New Glasgow Regional Police conducted a traffic stop on a half-ton truck on East River Road in New Glasgow.
Police learned that both the driver and passenger were on conditions to not have contact with each other and that the truck they were in was reported stolen from Digby County.
The 38-year old woman driving the truck was arrested and charged with Possession of stolen Property over $5000.
The passenger, a 37-year old man, was arrested and charged for Possession of stolen property over $5000.
New Glasgow Regional Police continue to investigate.
Last Monday aftrernoon, New Glasgow Regional Police responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls of a man smashing windows, causing significant property damage around Clyde Street and George Street in New Glasgow.
Officers responded immediately to the area and located and arrested the suspect on George Street.
A 36-year old Pictou County man has been charged with four counts of Mischief (Damage to Property)- Under $5000; 2 counts of Fail to Comply with Probation Order.; and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000.
He’s been remanded into custody and will appear in Provincial Court in Pictou this week.
The incident resulted in substantial damage to homes in the nearby area.
Hospital administrative staff in Nova Scotia have voted to accept a new five-year collective agreement with the province.
More than five-thousand workers represented by three unions had been without a new contract since October 31st, 2020.
The new deal includes a three-year wage adjustment totalling 6.5 per cent dating back to November 1st, 2020 and wage increases of three per cent on November 1st and again in November of next year.
There are also increased shift and weekend premiums as well as improvements to leave provisions in the contract.
A new study says hurricanes are twice as likely to progress from minor to major than they were decades ago.
The study, published in the journal “Scientific Reports,” looked at 830 Atlantic tropical cyclones since 1971.
It says that with warmer oceans serving as fuel, Atlantic hurricanes now have more energy to rapidly intensify.
The study found that in the last 20 years, storms intensified from a Category 1 storm to major hurricane 8.1 per cent of the time in just 24 hours, compared to just 3.2 per cent of the time from 1971 to 1990.
