The premiers of Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan say Canada’s need for housing is too complex for provinces not to be at the table when Ottawa strikes housing deals with municipalities.
The issue was in the spotlight Monday following a meeting of provincial premiers and territorial leaders in Halifax.
The two premiers discussed their objections to what they see as an end run by the federal government during a news conference in Halifax..
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston says provinces want to make sure their relationship with Ottawa is “fair and honest” while adding that there aren’t many housing projects in his province that his government isn’t eventually going to partner on.

A new report says the federal Fisheries Department is doing a poor job of monitoring Canada’s fishing industry.
Federal environment commissioner Jerry DeMarco says Fisheries and Oceans Canada lacks the ability to collect timely and dependable data about what’s being caught.
DeMarco says that means the department doesn’t know whether commercial stocks are being overfished.
He points to the collapse of the Atlantic cod population in the 1990s as an example of how expensive and difficult it is to recover depleted stocks than it is to keep them healthy in the first place.
Canadian hip-hop star Maestro Fresh Wes has announced the creation of a new scholarship in his name at Nova Scotia Community College.
He was announced as a 2024 inductee into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame yesterday, and says he’s celebrating the honour by establishing the scholarship.
The college says the annual award will support African Nova Scotian and Black students who are studying in the college’s trades and transportation program, but did not say how much the scholarship is worth.
Wes says he hopes the annual award will inspire Black students to pursue skilled trades.
