A new report says rent inflation in Canada is being driven by Nova Scotia and two other provinces.
Data released by Rentals-dot-c-a and Urbanation shows the average asking price for a rental in the country reached two-thousand-178 dollars in October — a 9.9 per cent year-over-year increase.
In Nova Scotia, the average asking rent for apartments increased 13.6 per cent from a year ago to two-thousand-97 dollars, and the average one-bedroom unit in Halifax was listed at one-thousand-875 dollars.
The report says the price increases in Nova Scotia as well as Alberta and Quebec are due to factors including strong population growth and large infusions of new rental supply priced at above-average market rent.
A recent survey by the Retail Council of Canada shows Atlantic Canadians spend the most during the holiday season.
The national survey shows people in this region spend around one-thousand 100 dollars per person.
The council’s Jim Cormier says 62 per cent of Canadians say they plan to spend most of their money in stores.
Cormier says that’s good news for brick and mortar retailers.

Halifax-area residents who lost their homes or saw their neighbourhoods devastated by wildfires that swept through several Nova Scotia regions earlier this year want to see lasting solutions.
Amanda Lutz says that when she and her husband return to their rebuilt home in the Highland Park area, she wants the city to have a clear emergency plan that includes safer evacuation routes.
One emergency exit was added to her neighbourhood in June.
But Lutz says the narrow two-lane road could lead to traffic jams during the next wildfire.
On Wednesday, a national test of the Alert Ready system is taking place in provinces and territories across the country. The test in Nova Scotia is scheduled for 1:55pm tomorrow afternoon.
