There’s a Special Weather Statement that has been issued for Nova Scotia, warning of significant rainfall and strong winds that are expected on Saturday.
Most of Nova Scotia could see 40 to 70 mm in rainfall, and some areas could see even more.
There will be strong winds as well, with maximum wind gusts expected to be southerly at 70 km/h, and even strong gusts along parts of the coast.
The heavy rain and strong winds are expected through the day Saturday and then ending by Sunday morning.
A plan is now in place to create the detailed flood plain maps that some of Nova Scotia’s emergency managers lacked when flooding occurred in late July.
Byron Rafuse — deputy minister of the Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing — told a legislature committee yesterday it’s expected the mapping will be conducted over the next three fiscal years.
The 10-million dollar program will allow municipalities to identify where there is a high risk of flooding, and to “address issues” where homes and other infrastructure have been built in flood-prone areas.
The maps will indicate the potential extent of water accumulation in various areas during coastal and inland flooding events.
Colchester County District RCMP have charged a man with Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking following a theft from a hardware store in Truro.
On Monday at about 2:30 p.m., police responded to the store on Robie St. and learned that two people stole merchandise before fleeing the scene in a Hyundai Genesis.
An RCMP officer quickly located the suspect vehicle, which was occupied by one man, in a nearby parking lot.
The man was safely arrested after he attempted to reverse over a retaining wall and got stuck.
When the 36-year-old Dartmouth man was searched, police found and seized more than 30 grams of Methamphetamines, a knife and stolen batteries.
The investigation is ongoing and officers are searching for the second suspect.
Nova Scotia’s massive health-care redevelopment plan will cross a key milestone next week with the opening of an outpatient centre in suburban Halifax that is expected to treat 280-thousand patients a year.
Premier Tim Houston says the opening of the Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre represents a “big moment” for the region.
The clinic will offer such services as initial visits with specialists, post-surgery follow-ups, blood collection and X-ray imaging and it is equipped with 100 clinical spaces and 24 dialysis stations.
The outpatient facility is set to welcome its first patients Monday.
On Friday, close to 350 Nova Scotia Community College students will participate in the 9th Annual Challenge Nova Scotia competition.
It’s a pan-provincial event that calls on NSCC students to develop innovative solutions to a social challenge issued to them by Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston.
At the beginning of the event, Premier Houston and NSCC President Don Bureaux will address participants via a pre-recorded video and reveal this year’s secret challenge question.
Teams of three to five students will then develop their solutions and create 90-second explainer videos.
