A new report from a research group at the University of Toronto shows Atlantic Canada is once again home to the country’s most food-insecure households.
The report shows nearly 23 per cent of households in Newfoundland and Labrador experienced hunger in 2022 — the highest rate among all provinces.
New Brunswick was second at more than 22 per cent of households, followed by Alberta, P-E-I and Nova Scotia, all at more than 21 per cent.
The report says most food-insecure households rely on employment income, which shows a need to increase the stability of lower-wage jobs and improve social assistance programs for working people.
Nova Scotia’s Progressive Conservative government has committed to adding or replacing a total of 2,200 long term care rooms across the province.
The province says this is in addition to about 3,500 new and replacement rooms that are expected to open by 2027.
Barbara Adams, Minister of Seniors and Long-Term Care, says the new and replacement rooms will reduce the pressure on hospitals and emergency rooms.
She says all new living spaces will be single rooms, each with its own private washroom.
Nova Scotians can now access a tool to confidentially report fraud or suspicious financial activity involving organizations funded by a branch of the Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration.
The skills and learning branch of the department funds hundreds of organizations across Nova Scotia each year.
The province says whistleblowers can remain anonymous and will not have to provide their names unless they choose to do so.
The fraud reporting service is available through Canadian company ClearView Connects.
