Environment Canada has issued wind warning alerts for the Maritime provinces, with wind speeds set to pick up this afternoon.
The weather agency says Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island could see rain and wind speeds between 80 and 100 kilometres per hour.
Environment Canada says in the alerts there is a risk of damage to buildings, roof shingles and windows due to the high winds in all three provinces.
It also warns utility outages may occur.
Strong winds are expected to begin this afternoon and extend into the evening.
Nova Scotia Power will be opening its Emergency Operations Centre today at 9am ahead of the approaching weather.
The Nova Scotia Power team is also working closely with the Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office and will be positioning crews across the province so they are ready to respond as soon as it is safe to do so.

New Glasgow Regional Police advised at about 10:00pm on Sunday night that they were on scene at a Gas Station and Convenience Store on Marsh Street and Washington Street in New Glasgow.
Police indicated they were conducting an active investigation but offered no further details and asked that the public avoid the area to allow officers to conduct the investigation.
Police indicated there was no threat to public safety and that a further update would be provided when available.
R-C-M-P in Cumberland County are reporting two suspected overdose deaths believed to be caused by illicit drug use.
The bodies of two men were found Friday at separate homes in Springhill.
A 31-year-old man was found dead at one of the homes, while a 35-year-old man was pronounced dead minutes later at the second home.
Police say they found a small quantity of unknown substances in pill and powder form along with drug paraphernalia at one of the locations.
With holiday season upon us, a reminder from the Nova Scotia RCMP that there is zero tolerance for impaired driving.
Drivers can expect to see RCMP officers and focused check points on roadways across the province anytime of year, but especially over the next several weeks.
The RCMP asks that you plan ahead if you’ll be consuming drugs or alcohol; identify a designated driver, use public transit, call a taxi, or stay the night.
Also, if you’re hosting a gathering; provide non-alcoholic options and ask your guests how they are getting home safely.

The Town of New Glasgow Water Utility is advising that hydrant flow testing will take place on Little Harbour Rd., Reservoir St., and Birchview Crescent today.
As a result, residents on those streets along with Forest Hill Dr., Hawthorne Dr., Maplewood Dr., Belmont St., Roderick St., Robertson St., Matterhorn Dr., Mount Batton Dr., Sierra Dr., Norma Ct., Dover Ave., Lancaster Ave. and MacLaren Ave. may experience lower water pressure and or dirty water for a short period of time.
However, the water is safe to consume and water quality will be monitored.
