Environment Canada has issued special weather statement for parts of northern mainland Nova Scotia.
Antigonish, Colchester, Cumberland, Inverness, Pictou and Victoria counties could see 4 hours or more of freezing rain Thursday night into Friday.
Halifax Regional Police say a 14-year-old youth is charged with two counts of mischief, motor vehicle theft, flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of a conveyance, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and breach of probation after an incident on Tuesday.
Around 4:45pm, a vehicle was reported stolen from Barrington Street earlier in the day.
After 2 attempts to pull over the vehicle, the youth fled from police, a tire-deflation device was used to slow the vehicle’s speed near the 100 block of Herring Cove Road.
The driver struck a bus shelter and power pole near Shoreham Lane. The driver was arrested at the scene, while two passengers fled on foot.
The incident resulted in a power outage in the area, and police said the road was closed to traffic for several hours as crews made the necessary repairs.
The youth was expected to appear in court yesterday.
A new Health Canada report says the number of medically assisted deaths in 2022 was more than 30 per cent higher than the year prior.
A report published Tuesday says medically assisted deaths constituted 4.1 per cent of all deaths in Canada last year.
The report says 13,241 people received medically assisted deaths in 2022 — a 31.2 per cent jump over 2021, and almost 45,000 people have received medically assisted deaths since its introduction in 2016.
The report is a comprehensive overview of Canada’s medical assistance in dying (MAID) law and its effects. The law is set to extend access to those whose sole medical condition is a mental illness in March 2024.
