The mayor of New Glasgow says a decision to build a long-term care facility in the town’s historic Black neighbourhood will be reviewed. Mayor Nancy Dicks says the town is responding to objections raised by members of the community. She says the decision to hold a new vote follows a meeting on Monday with members of the African Nova Scotian community, who said they weren’t consulted about the project, which called for the facility to be built next to a long-established community centre. A member of the centre’s board says community members were concerned they would lose parts of the property, which includes a playground, a soccer field and basketball courts.
Statistics Canada says the annual national inflation rate rose 3.4 per cent in December. The federal agency released its consumer price index report Tuesday morning, showing inflation ticked up from 3.1 per cent in November. Economists were widely expecting this rise due to a sharper decline in gasoline prices in December 2022 compared to last month. Grocery prices were up 4.7 per cent from a year ago, matching the pace of increase in November. Nova Scotia’s annual inflation rate in December was 3.6 percent.
The federal government is offering 980-thousand-dollars for dozens of electric vehicle charging stations to be installed this spring in the Halifax area.
Ten of the new stations will be “fast chargers” that can fully charge a vehicle in about half-an-hour.
The other 46 stations will take between four and 10 hours for a full charge.
So far, the federal government says it has supported the installation of more than 43-thousand charging stations across Canada.
