A special Council meeting will be held at the Glasgow Square Theatre on Monday, January 29th at 6 P.M. to reconsider the motion of December 18th regarding the recommended site for the long-term care facility in New Glasgow.
The decision to build a long-term care facility in the town’s historic Black neighbourhood is being reviewed.
Mayor Nancy Dicks says the town is responding to objections raised by members of the community.
She says the decision to hold a new vote follows a meeting on Monday with members of the African Nova Scotian community, who said they weren’t consulted about the project, which called for the facility to be built next to a long-established community centre.
A member of the centre’s board says community members were concerned they would lose parts of the property, which includes a playground, a soccer field and basketball courts.
The Town says that the public consultation session for the proposed site for the long-term care facility that was scheduled for January 27th is now rescheduled until a new proposed location for the facility is identified and recommended.
Officials say Nova Scotia is on track to meet a target of 95-hundred new daycare spaces by March 2026, and ensure that those spaces cost an average of 10-dollars a day.
The target is part of a 605-million-dollar daycare agreement with the federal government signed in July 2021.
But Nova Scotia Education Department officials aren’t saying whether the target will be enough to meet the needs of the province’s growing population.
During an appearance Wednesday before a legislature committee, the Deputy minister said the department knows it needs to do more to meet demand.
Nova Scotia’s population increased almost three per cent from October 2022 and October 2023 — the third fastest year-over-year growth since 1951.
Statistics released on Wednesday show that during the month of December, Nova Scotia RCMP charged 125 drivers with impaired related offences.
Of those, 55 were charged with Impaired Driving by Alcohol, and 7 were charged with Impaired Driving by Drugs.
A sports note, the Pictou County Weeks Crushers host the Fredericton Red Wings at 7:00pm tonight at the Wellness Centre in Maritime Junior Hockey League action.
