Gasoline prices and diesel prices both increased overnight in Nova Scotia. Gasoline prices went up by 3.2 cents per litre, leaving the minimum pump price for regular self-serve gasoline at 156.5 cents per litre in the local area. Diesel prices rose by 4.5 cents per litre, putting the minimum pump price for diesel at 194.0 cents per litre locally.
A young man has been charged after conservation officers in Nova Scotia investigated what caused a massive wildfire last year in the southwest corner of the province.
The province’s Natural Resources Department issued a statement saying 22-year-old Dalton Clark Stewart of Villagedale is facing three charges related to the Barrington Lake fire that started last May southwest of Shelburne.
He has been charged with lighting a fire on private land without the owner’s consent; failing to make reasonable efforts to prevent the spread of a fire; and leaving a fire unattended.
The fire grew to become one of the largest wildfires in the province’s history, devouring 23-thousand hectares and 60 homes before it was brought under control on June 13th.
Nova Scotia RCMP have released statistics on stunting charges, showing that in December the Nova Scotia RCMP charged 9 drivers with stunting on a number of highways across the province. Of note were several incidents in which the driver was clocked going 60 to 70 kh over the posted speed limit. Anyone driving a vehicle 50 Km/hr or more, over a speed limit, may be charged with stunting. The fine for stunting in Nova Scotia is over $2,400 for a first offence, six points on your license and an immediate seven-day roadside license suspension.
The provincial government says it’s working with beef producers on new projects and programs to increase production in Nova Scotia.
Agriculture Minister Greg Morrow says the government wants to increase local food consumption and the percentage of food budget spent on locally grown and produced foods.
Under a new initiative Morrow’s department will help address the training needs of meat processors, help with new management practices and farm innovations aimed at climate change and help to promote consumer awareness.
There are 380 licensed beef producers in Nova Scotia.
The provincial government is seeking nominations for its Medal of Bravery.
The medal is given to Nova Scotians who help those in need, often in dangerous circumstances, and put their own safety at risk.
Nomination forms are available at Access Nova Scotia centres, M-L-A offices and online.
The deadline for nominations is May 1st.
