Mid-May is when Northumberland Ferries says the MV Saaremaa 1 will return to duty with the ferry service between PEI and Nova Scotia. The ferry is owned by STQ out of Quebec, and once it’s finished with its requirements with STQ, the MV Saaremaa 1 will set sail for Caribou in mid-May. Once in Caribou, it will complete some final preparations and training before entering service for Northumberland Ferries – initially as a backup on stand-by for the MV Confederation until two vessel service starts on June 16th. Then, MV Saaremaa 1 will remain in service until MV Fanafjord, the ferry purchased for the route by Ottawa, goes into service. The charter agreement with STQ does have an emergency recall provision in the event of a disruption on STQ’s ferry route.
