The Canadian Hurricane Centre says hurricane Debby could have an impact on Eastern Canada later this week or on the weekend.
The centre issued a brief statement yesterday, noting that Debby had made landfall in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane, but the storm was expected to slow down and weaken over the next few days.
The hurricane caused catastrophic flooding in Florida and is being blamed for at least four deaths.
The hurricane centre’s statement says considerable uncertainty remains about how Debby will evolve as it moves north.
New Glasgow Regional Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect involved in the theft of a cell phone from a business on Lavinia Street in New Glasgow. The suspect entered the business on Monday at 3:30pm and was involved in the theft of a cell phone that was the property of an employee from the business. The suspect then fled the area on Lavinia Street. Police have released pictures of the suspect.and ask anyone who can identify the suspect or was in the area at the time of the incident that may have photos or video footage, on Monday at 3:30pm, to contact the New Glasgow Regional Police or Crime Stoppers
The New Glasgow Regional Police and RCMP are is warning of an ongoing scam that has been evident throughout Nova Scotia and Pictou County. The Grandparent Scam works by focusing on the elderly population — putting them in an emotional position to react with a sense of urgency with the goal of extorting money from them. A senior gets a phone call, typically on their home phone/landline, from a caller claiming to be their grandchild or calling on behalf of their grandchild. They say they need money as soon as possible, whether to pay bail, lawyers fees, hospital fees, ambulance fees, etc. They will say the payment is needed immediately to avoid going to jail or to be released from jail. If you receive such a phone call, hang up and contact them directly using a phone number you already have.

Canada’s federal government says it has completed negotiations with the U-S on an agreement for domestic space launches although an agreement is yet to be signed. The agreement will establish the legal and technical safeguards needed to use U-S space launch technology, expertise and data for launches in Canada. Maritime Launch Services, which is developing Canada’s first commercial spaceport in the Canso area, says the agreement is a major step forward for the industry. The C-E-O says his company is preparing for its first orbital launch in 2026.
