R-C-M-P say an employee of the Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education faces sexual offence charges involving a student. Police allege that last December a math intervention teacher who spends time in various schools within the centre’s jurisdiction inappropriately touched a student on multiple occasions at Uniacke District school. The 35-year-old man has been charged with sexual interference and sexual exploitation of a young person and was released on conditions. He will appear at Shubenacadie Provincial Court on October 7th.
Unionized support workers in Nova Scotia’s public schools are pushing for improvements to deal with rising school violence just weeks before students are to return to the classroom.
CUPE announced an online petition yesterday and released a 13-page report on the violence affecting its membership.
Nova Scotia president Nan McFadgen says the province’s five-thousand support workers end up dealing with the majority of violent incidents in schools and they want a say in addressing the problem.
The union says despite promises of consultation over the summer, it’s not heard from provincial education officials.
No change in gasoline prices overnight in Nova Scotia, while diesel prices rose slightly. Gasoline prices remain the same with the minimum pump price for regular self-serve gasoline at 169.9 cents per litre locally. Diesel prices rose by 1-cent per litre, putting the minimum pump price for diesel at 168.9 cents per litre in the local area.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre says Hurricane Ernesto is expected to track “well south” of Nova Scotia by the time the storm approaches the Atlantic region on Monday.
The forecasting service says Nova Scotia and southeastern Newfoundland may receive some rain that day.
The agency also says there is a low probability of winds in Nova Scotia and “a bit higher” chance of strong winds in Newfoundland.
The Halifax-based agency says the hurricane will create high seas that will begin arriving along the Atlantic coast this weekend.
