Northumberland Ferries says the MV Confederation will be out of service for at least a week or two as it undergoes repairs after an incident Sunday. The company issued a statement saying that the MV Confederation experienced a mechanical issue while entering Wood Islands on Sunday. That issue caused the vessel to collide with the wharf on approach for docking at the berth, and resulted in some structural damage to the bow visor on the ship. None of the passengers or crew members were injured. Northumberland Ferries is talking with local ship repair facilities about the damage to the vessel’s bow visor. So, the ferry service is reduced to the MV Saaremaa 1’s sailing schedule until the repair is completed. The MV Saaremaa 1 will continue to operate on a four-trip daily schedule. The sailings cancelled today include – from Caribou the 8:30am, 11:45am, 3:15pm and 6:30pm; and from Wood Islands the 7:00am, 10:00am, 1:30pm and 5:00pm.
Premier Tim Houston is doubling down on comments he made Thursday about asylum seekers. The Progressive Conservative premier says he will not accept any attempt by the federal government to resettle thousands of asylum seekers in the province. In a prepared statement, Houston said Ottawa wants to send nearly six-thousand asylum seekers to Nova Scotia, something he calls unacceptable. Federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller has said there is no plan to redistribute asylum seekers without compensation or provincial consent — and he said the numbers recently cited by some premiers are just for planning purposes and negotiations.
The Nova Scotia Premier is repeating his government’s calls for Ottawa to foot the entirety of the bill for work needed to protect a vital strip of land that connects the province to the rest of the country ahead of a new parliamentary session.
Tim Houston sent a letter yesterday to the seven Liberal members of Parliament in Nova Scotia urging Ottawa to fully fund the expensive work needed to protect the Chignecto Isthmus against rising sea levels.
The letter says the isthmus is vulnerable to the effects of climate change and one severe weather event could disconnect the province from the rest of Canada.
Both the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick governments want Ottawa to foot the bill for the estimated 650-million-dollar infrastructure project to strengthen the dike system and rail lines, but the federal government has said it will only cover half the cost.
A second apparent assassination attempt against former U-S president Donald Trump has happened, this time in Florida.
It took place on Sunday as he played golf at his West Palm Beach course.
Trump was not hurt and the suspect was arrested.
The incident has raised questions about how such a thing could have happened for the second time in as many months.
A sports note, the Pictou County Weeks Crushers opened their season on the weekend with a couple of games. They lost 5-4 in OT to Yarmouth, and then 9-4 to the Valley Wildcats.
