Nova Scotia’s N-D-P opposition has its doubts about the Progressive Conservative government’s latest budget update. Finance Minister Allan MacMaster has revised his spring budget forecast, increasing the deficit from 187-million dollars to 654 million. N-D-P Leader Claudia Chender says the government has predicted such a deficit in prior years, yet it turned into a surplus. In the meantime, she wonders about 243 million dollars in extra spending that didn’t go through the spring budget process. She notes some of that spending wasn’t urgent, and the housing budget – which is urgent – is being underspent.
On Monday, new regulations on short-term rentals, including Airbnbs, came into effect across Nova Scotia. Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister John Lohr announced the new regulations in August to combat the province’s growing housing crisis. The new rules will require short-term rentals to provide documentation proving compliance with municipal bylaws, consent from condo boards and primary residence. There will also be a registration fee, ranging from $50 to $2,000 per unit, depending on the accommodation type and location. The higher rates apply to short-term rentals in areas where the need for housing is greater.
