The Bloc Québécois is threatening to topple the government as soon as next week if the Liberal government doesn’t double back and support an old age pension increase for younger seniors.
Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet says he will work with other parties if the Liberals don’t support a bill increasing seniors’ pensions by 10 per cent.
Most Liberals voted against a Bloc motion, save for five M-Ps from Atlantic Canada.
The Atlantic provinces have the highest proportion of residents over 65.
Pictou County District RCMP continue to ask for the public’s assistance in locating 58-year-old Glenn Robert Freeman. Glenn “Gnome” Freeman was last heard from on June 11th and was believed to have been in Ottawa at that time. Freeman may be travelling across Canada and is believed to be travelling on foot, and by hitchhiking. Freeman is 5-foot-4, has brown hair and beard, and blue eyes, and he wears glasses. Pictou County District RCMP are asking that Freeman, or anyone with information on his whereabouts, contact them or Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers.
About half of the roughly seven-thousand households on Nova Scotia’s public housing waitlist are seniors.
Deputy housing minister Byron Rafuse told a legislature committee yesterday that seniors also make up more than half of the 17-thousand-500 low-income residents living in the province’s 11-thousand-200 public housing units.
Meanwhile, the head of the Nova Scotia Public Housing Agency, says unit turnaround times have been reduced by 25 per cent since December 2022.
It now takes about four-and-a-half months for the agency to prepare a unit for a new tenant.
The Pictou County Christmas Fund is BACK for its 50th year. The annual telethon was started to raise funds to provide Christmas dinner to local families needing support during the holiday season. This year marks a return to the deCoste Centre theatre and the November 24 production will be a hybrid show, featuring live entertainment as well as the virtual performances. The telethon will be broadcast on Eastlink Community TV, 1-6 p.m. Audio streaming will once again be made available on the organization’s website, and 94.1 The Breeze will also be providing reports throughout the day.
Registering for Christmas Fund assistance is once again required. This can now be done online at pictoucountychristmasfund.ca/Registration or by filling out a paper form that will be available at all Pictou County Library locations. Deadline to register for assistance is November 29th.
