With a provincial election expected to begin soon, Premier Tim Houston has announced plans to reduce the harmonized sales tax by one percentage point. The premier says that as of April 1st, his government will cut to the provincial portion of the tax from 15 per cent to 14 per cent. Houston says his Progressive Conservative government is making the change because people need more help to deal with the high cost of living. A one percentage point reduction to the H-S-T would cost the government about 260-million dollars in foregone revenue in the next fiscal year.
