Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is defending his decision to take the G-S-T off more than just essential items and send 250-dollar cheques to millions of Canadians next spring. The Liberals are asking M-P’s to approve the plan that will temporarily take the federal sales tax off some essentials like kids’ clothes and car seats but also non-essential items including beer, wine and video game consoles. The Liberals will need to get support from one of the opposition parties to get it passed through Parliament — and the N-D-P appears poised to do that. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre blasted the N-D-P and Liberals and called the tax break a “trick.” If it’s approved, the G-S-T break would take effect on December 14th and last for about two months

Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Houston is asking Nova Scotians to be patient, saying his government’s plan for health care, housing, and affordability is working – and that he needs a second term in office to see his vision through. During a “roundtable discussion” hosted by C-T-V yesterday that often became fiery, Houston told voters the economy is growing and there are hundreds more doctors and thousands more nurses in the province than before his party won the 2021 election. But Churchill and Chender reminded voters that the doctor wait-list has doubled since 2021, that there are more emergency room closures, and that the housing and affordability crises are starting to make people sour on immigration. Voters go to the polls on Tuesday.
A group that advocates for women’s rights says domestic violence hasn’t been given enough attention during the Nova Scotia election campaign. Transition House Association of Nova Scotia released a report this week calling on the province to take immediate steps to reduce violence against women and girls. It also called on all political parties to commit to more funding for groups that address intimate-partner violence. The group says the level of funding must reflect the urgency of addressing systemic and widespread violence towards women in the province.
