The Market Wharf in Pictou is getting some infrastructure improvements thanks to funding from all three levels of government. The federal, provincial and municipal governments will spend a combined six-million-dollars on storm protection infrastructure. This includes construction of a fixed breakwater to replace the floating breakwater, the building of a more resilient wharf extension and the raising of structure levels along Pictou’s waterfront. The town has seen rising sea levels and an increase in storm surges, both which are expected to intensify.
Police are advising of a recurring scam targeting seniors across Nova Scotia.
With this scam, the victim receives a call from someone pretending to be a family member who indicates that they have been arrested, they are in jail and need bail money.
Another person pretending to be from the legal system becomes involved in the call and informs the victim that they need to pay money to have their loved one released from custody. In all the recent incidents, a suspect made arrangements to pick up the money in person by attending the victim’s home or meeting in a public place.
If you receive a call like this, do not provide or confirm any personal or financial information and hang up the phone.
Norovirus cases are on the rise across Canada, and Nova Scotia is no exception. The provincial health authority says while it does not track the exact number of cases locally, anecdotally doctors have seen an increase this season. The Health Authority’s medical executive director says the virus is highly contagious and leads to vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps and sometimes causes a fever, headache and body aches. Symptoms will typically develop about one to two days after exposure, and last one to three days.
Today is the day Donald Trump assumes power over the United States of America.
He will be sworn-in in a ceremony in Washington as the 47th president.
Trump is expected to act swiftly after the ceremony, with executive orders already prepared for his signature to jump-start mass deportations, increase fossil fuel development and reduce civil service protections for government workers.
