A Special Weather Statement has been issued by Environment Canada for Pictou County and eastern parts of the province advising of the potential for significant snowfall. From this afternoon through Thursday morning we could see upwards of 20 cm of snow, together with strong winds causing blowing snow and reduced visibilities.

The Nova Scotia government has a green light from Ottawa for its 425-million-dollar plan to clean up Boat Harbour. But the federal approval comes with a long list of conditions that includes continuing to look for another site to store contaminated sludge in the long term. Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault issued his decision last Friday for the cleanup of the body of water near Pictou Landing First Nation that for decades received effluent from the Northern Pulp mill. Under terms of the approval, an advisory committee has to be established to examine alternative locations for the sludge removed from Boat Harbour.
Economists expect the Bank of Canada to lower its key interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point today to three per cent.
The drop will mark a slowdown after the central bank cut is key rate by half a percentage point twice in a row in October and December.

The North End Recreation Centre’s Winter Carnival is set for this weekend. It will run Friday through Sunday and feature a number of family activities including a kids dance, pancake breakfast, chocolate bar bingo, snowman village and a skate. The Town of New Glasgow says there will also be a fireworks display Friday at 8 p.m. at the North End Recreation Centre.
