Premier Tim Houston and Canada’s other provincial and territorial premiers descended on the United States Capital Wednesday in an unprecedented diplomatic push to stave off U-S tariffs on Canadian imports. The premiers even made it to the White House in Washington for a meeting with U-S President Donald Trump’s senior advisers. Canada is facing 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminum exports to the U-S and across-the-board tariffs on all other items except energy in early March. After the meetings, B-C Premier David Eby wanted to make something clear — Canada would not become the 51st state. Eby says there were “frank conversations” about the idea floated repeatedly by Donald Trump and how the prospect was a non-starter for Canada. Still, Trump’s Deputy Chief of Staff, James Blair, suggested on social media that it was not off the table in the eyes of the Trump administration.
