Federal Liberals elected Mark Carney to lead their party into the next election in a resounding first-ballot victory — putting him on track to become the next prime minister of Canada.
The victory for Carney brings a close to the two-month long leadership race and clears the path for an expected early election call.
Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, Liberal M-P Karina Gould and former Liberal M-P Frank Baylis were also vying for the top job.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave his farewell speech to Liberals just before former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney was announced as his replacement.
Ella-Grace Trudeau introduced her father to the crowd before his final speech, saying she looks forward to seeing more of him at home and less of him online.
Trudeau nodded to the challenges Canada has faced from the last decade, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and says he’s confident Canada will emerge from this latest existential challenge even stronger.
A new poll suggests few Canadians are open to President Donald Trump’s repeated pitches for Canada to become a U-S state. A Leger poll says just nine per cent of Canadians want Canada to become the 51st state, while 85 per cent do not. Support for the idea is highest in Alberta, at 15 per cent, and lowest in Atlantic Canada at just three per cent. The poll sampled more than 15-hundred Canadian adults but because it was conducted online, it can’t be assigned a margin of error.
A reminder from the Town of Stellarton that March 19th is the nomination deadline for the Francis Bud MacKay Volunteer of the Year Award. There are many community groups with volunteers who serve the residents of Stellarton, and this is an opportunity for community and sport groups to recognize outstanding volunteers. A volunteer will be honoured by the Town during National Volunteer Week and at the Province’s volunteer reception later this year.
