Nova Scotia has extended its wildfire season through to the end of October, as the Lake George wildfire remains out of control.
Typically, wildfire season ends October 15th.
Natural Resources Minister Tory Rushton says it’s rare to have wildfire activity so late in the season.
The extension means daily burn restrictions will remain in place across the province through the end of the month.
And a total burn ban remains in place in Annapolis County.
The Town of New Glasgow hosted a Community Safety Public Forum last night at the Glasgow Square Theatre. The Forum was on Community Safety, Addressing the Impacts of Homelessness, Addiction and Mental Health. In announcing the Forum, the Town said that in recent months, there have been escalating concerns regarding the growth of encampments, open drug use, safety in public spaces, and the operations of Viola’s Place. The Town says those challenges have contributed to heightened worries about safety, housing, and overall community well-being.
Premier Tim Houston is in Ottawa today to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss energy security and the economic benefits of Nova Scotia’s Wind West project.
Houston’s office issued a statement yesterday highlighting the Wind West megaproject and touting its potential to make Nova Scotia a clean energy superpower.
Carney’s Liberal government recently identified Wind West in a recent nation-building strategy that said the proposal needs more work.
Nova Scotia’s minimum wage increased Wednesday to 16 dollars and 50 cents per hour from 15 dollars and 70 cents. The increase is the second this year, boosting the wage by a total of one dollar and 30 cents in 2025. According to the provincial government, about 40-thousand workers currently earn minimum wage, or about 7.7 per cent of the labour force. The workers are mainly employed in the retail and the food and accommodation industries.
Groups across Nova Scotia celebrated Treaty Day on Wednesday, commemorating the Peace and Friendship Treaties of the 1700s. October is also Mi’kmaw History Month; the theme this year is Storytelling and Storytellers.
