Prime Minister Mark Carney says the absence of the U-S from the G-20 summit in South Africa is a reminder that the centre of gravity in the global economy is shifting.
The prime minister saluted countries at the summit for releasing a joint document, noting that those which signed on represent three-quarters of global population, and two-thirds of the world’s economic output.
That joint declaration touched on climate change and gender equality, despite Trump staging an American boycott of the summit.
Carney says the task for he and other Canadian representatives is to ensure that Canada doesn’t only endure the shift in gravity, but prospers under it.
Justice Minister and Central Nova MP Sean Fraser spoke as part of a panel Sunday morning at the Halifax International Security Forum.
He hammered home the message of strength through global unity and respect without ever directly naming U-S President Donald Trump.
Fraser referenced the controversy of Trump referring to Canada as the “51st State,” saying those types of comments made many Canadians of all political parties angry.
