Dozens of people loudly booed Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston at the African Heritage Month gala in Halifax this weekend after last week’s budget cut 130-million dollars in government grants.
Social media videos show the premier got a rough reception during his speech at the event, with many attendees holding a single fist high in the air.
Last week’s cuts impacted many programs focused on Black and African Nova Scotians. Houston told the crowd that if adjustments are needed, his government will listen.
The R-C-M-P says two youths have been charged in a sexual assault investigation involving a hockey team in the Truro area. An investigation was launched last month related to hazing incidents involving the team after a youth reported they were assaulted during a private gathering last October. Police say both youths have been charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual assault, with one of them also charged with assault with a weapon. Two other youths arrested in the case will not face charges, but the Mounties say they do believe there may be other victims who have not come forward.
A probe into the death of a worker at a Walmart bakery in Nova Scotia has found no safety violations were involved. The Nova Scotia government investigation was sparked by the death of a 19-year-old woman whose body was found in a walk-in bakery oven in October of 2024. The province’s Labour Department says its investigation found the machine was in good working order in addition to there being no safety violations or any broader concerns associated with that particular model of oven.
