There is a Special Weather Statement issued for Pictou County advising of heavy rain and strong southerly winds. From early this evening through Tuesday we could see upwards of 30 mm of rain, possibly more in some areas, along with potential wind gusts of up to 80 km/h.
At 12:01 a.m. on April 1st, the Pictou County District RCMP will assume responsibility for policing services in the Town of Trenton. S/Sgt. Curtis MacKinnon, District Commander for Pictou County District RCMP, says the RCMP has worked closely with the New Glasgow Regional Police Service and the Town to ensure a smooth, well-planned transition. He says there will be no interruption during the transition, and all records and information will be securely transferred from New Glasgow Regional Police Service to the RCMP. New Glasgow Regional Police will continue to provide policing services to the Town of Trenton until 12:00am on April 1st.
A provincial committee has submitted six recommendations to Nova Scotia’s justice minister following a review of a death linked to domestic violence case. The Domestic Violence Death Review Committee said the quality of services provided to survivors by government and non-governmental organizations “are too variable across the province.” As well, it found services delivered in rural Nova Scotia are not nearly as comprehensive as those provided in urban areas. At the top of its list of proposed changes is a call for working with the province’s universities and colleges to implement curriculums specific to gender-based violence.
Officially, wildfire season in Nova Scotia began on Sunday. Provincial fire officials are asking residents to check the daily burn restrictions list before starting a fire. As well, they say fires should never be left unattended. And when putting out a fire, it’s important to douse it with water, stir the ashes and repeat until everything is cool to the touch.
The Nova Scotia Stampede won’t be running this year. Truro’s Rath Eastlink Community Centre, which hosts the event, says it has become incredibly popular but the centre is facing a number of operational challenges and infrastructure needs that require focused attention. It says it will look at hosting the stampede again in 2027.
The Town of New Glasgow, after discussions with the board of New Glasgow’s Art at Night, has announced the creation of a new event for this year, Flourish After Dark. This event will serve as a placeholder, with plans for New Glasgow’s Art at Night to return in its original form in 2027. The event will remain free to attend, and there will be no cost for artists and musicians to participate. The date will also remain the same as the previously planned Art at Night. More details will be announced in the coming weeks.
