Trenton’s Town Council has announced the intention to close the outdoor pool. Council says it has directed the Chief Administrative Officer to address current fiscal challenges in this year’s budget by removing future funding for the outdoor pool. Council will consider the draft budget in the upcoming weeks, and if passed, the outdoor pool will be closed permanently.
The Town says that in considering anticipated future costs, Council determined that continuing to operate the outdoor pool would place significant pressure on municipal finances and would ultimately require property tax increases. The Mayor says the projected costs of the pool would be over $50,000 for a 10-week facility, and that’s simply not feasible without a tax rate increase –something Council is not comfortable doing.
RCMP Northeast Nova Traffic Services stopped several stunters this past week. One of those drivers stopped was travelling westbound on Highway 104 in New Glasgow at 162kh in a posted 110kh zone. Police say the 39-year-old driver from Studio City, California was charged with stunting. Two other drivers were charged after being stopped in Antigonish County — one travelling 142kh in a 90kh zone, and the other for going 158kh in a posted 100kh zone.
The RCMP is investigating a suspicious death in Antigonish County. On Sunday night, just before 8:30pm, police responded to a report of a residential fire in Upper Big Tracadie. After the fire was extinguished, officers found a deceased man nearby on the property. The investigation is being led by Southwest Nova Major Crime Unit, along with the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service and the Office of the Fire Marshal. The RCMP says that at this point, investigators do not believe that this suspicious death is associated to the May 21 homicide in West Arm Tracadie
Canada’s postal workers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a new five-year contract. The union for some 55-thousand Canada Post employees says more than four in five members voted in favour of the deal. It includes wage increases of 6.5 per cent and three per cent in the first two years, and locks in hikes that match the annual inflation rate in years three through five. That’s on top of enhanced benefits and a weekend parcel delivery model. The deal marks the end of a drawn-out, more than two-year saga of collective bargaining and rotating strikes against the backdrop of a push to overhaul the Crown corporation’s business model.
