The Bank of Canada will announce its latest interest rate decision and release a new monetary policy report on Wednesday. The decision comes after annual inflation rose to 3.2 per cent in May, driven partly by higher gasoline prices. Economists widely expect the central bank to keep its policy rate unchanged at 2.25 per cent. The report will offer updated guidance on inflation, economic growth and the path for future rate decisions.

The RCMP says work continues in the construction of the new Pictou County District RCMP Detachment in Stellarton. The Mounties say that inside the building, drywall installation continues; and mechanical and electrical systems are being installed. Work on the exterior is also progressing, with glazing installation underway and preparing for the distinctive sloped front wall. Completion is expected in fall 2026

Police have arrested a man they allege is responsible for an assault and racist tirade at a Halifax Costco. Officers were dispatched to the Costco after receiving reports that a man was yelling at a family before he allegedly assaulted another shopper. His alleged racial slurs and threats were captured on video and posted on social media. Halifax Regional Police say they arrested the suspect, a 37-year-old man, at a home in Port Dufferin on Thursday. He’s been charged with public incitement of hatred, assault and four courts of uttering threats to cause bodily harm or death, along with other charges

Advocates and industry groups are calling on the Nova Scotia government to make it illegal for employers to pocket gratuities meant for service industry staff.
The Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia says that while most businesses are fair to their staff, the organization has long called for an end to tip theft.
Nova Scotia is the only province in Atlantic Canada without rules protecting service workers from such thefts.
Provincial labour minister Nolan Young says the province needs to evaluate its options.

Melanoma Canada is bringing its mobile skin cancer screening clinic to the Maritimes.
The Mole Mobile will make its first stop in the region beginning with a visit to Halifax from July 31st until August 2nd.
The Mole Mobile offers free skin cancer screenings to underserved communities throughout Canada.
The clinic has been touring since 2023, but the 2026 tour has expanded to include all 10 provinces.
