Canada will announce retaliatory tariffs against the United States today after relations deteriorated sharply Monday. Prime Minister Mark Carney is accusing Washington of trying to destroy Canada’s major industries, like autos, steel and aluminum. President Donald Trump told Canadian leaders to “fall in line” or face the consequences. Ottawa is also expected to give details on supports for workers that are affected by the 50 per cent tariffs on about 28-billion-dollars’ worth of Canadian goods.
A number of gender-based violence advocates in Nova Scotia are calling on the Progressive Conservative government to reconsider Pictou West MLA Marco MacLeod’s role as energy minister due to misogynistic rap lyrics he wrote. Halifax’s Adsum House, a shelter for women, families and gender-diverse people, called for MacLeod’s resignation earlier this month. MacLeod, who is 37-years-old, apologized Thursday for the harmful rap song that he says was first posted online 13 years ago and circulated recently after reporting by Frank Magazine. Several advocates signed the letter issued Monday morning saying MacLeod’s lyrics normalize degradation of women.
Police say a high-risk offender who was released Monday from a New Brunswick prison is believed to be coming to Nova Scotia. Police say Robert Edgar Paul isn’t required to tell police where he’ll be living but it’s believed he will be residing in Millbrook. The 35-year-old served his full sentence for dangerous driving causing bodily harm and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. Police caution that Paul has a long history of both violent and non-violent offences.
An update Monday from New Glasgow Police after a High-Risk Sex Offender Notification had been issued last week. The notification was issued in accordance with the Nova Scotia Release of High-Risk Offender Information Protocol — and it advised that a high-risk sex offender was within the New Glasgow area. 43-year old Matthew William Rozins had been released into the community under supervision.
On Monday, New Glasgow Police said they had confirmed that Matthew William Rozins is not residing within the New Glasgow area at this time.
